October Half-Term in Lascaux: Family Apartments, Dordogne
The French autumn holidays, from Saturday 17 October to Monday 2 November 2026, are a lovely time to travel as a family. The countryside turns to autumn colours, and the prehistoric sites of the Vézère valley are a pleasure to visit at a quieter pace than in high summer. To make the most of it without any constraints, nothing beats a place of your own. Here is what is on at Lascaux IV during the holidays, and how to plan a stay of two, four or seven nights in Montignac-Lascaux.
What’s on at Lascaux IV this autumn
Lascaux IV, 500 metres from Les Toits de Lascaux, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. During the holidays, the site offers:
• The children’s storytelling tour, every morning at 9 am: led by a guide in costume, children aged 5 to 10 enter the cave by torchlight and learn to read the paintings and signs of Lascaux while having fun. Parents, and children under 5, follow a standard guided tour ten minutes later, and everyone meets up again in the Atelier. The tour is in French only.
• The investigation tour “The Secrets of the Spearhead”, on Thursday 29 October at 5 pm: you thought you were going on a standard tour, but a mysterious disappearance sweeps you into a real-life investigation. For ages 8 and over.
• The “Cave Art and Gastronomy” evening, on Friday 30 October at 5 pm: a two-hour Prestige tour by torchlight, fully guided, followed by a dinner created by a Michelin-starred chef, with water, wine and coffee included. You can arrive earlier to explore the exhibition spaces at your own pace. The evening is in French only.
• Standard tours, every day, guided or with an audio guide, on a single ticket or a combined ticket with the Parc du Thot.
This information comes from the Lascaux IV online ticket office. Details and booking for the gourmet evening are on its website (in French). The site is open all year round, with seasonal opening hours: until 1 November, then from 2 November to 3 January 2027. Booking ahead is recommended during the holidays.
Why choose self-catering for the holidays
Staying at Les Toits de Lascaux means more freedom. Check-in is self-service from 4 pm, with no reception desk, and check-out is as late as 10.30 am. You eat when it suits the children, in a fitted kitchen with an induction hob, a fridge and a microwave (and a dishwasher in the apartments).
All the accommodation also has:
• bed linen and towels provided;
• free, unlimited Wi-Fi;
• reversible air conditioning;
• an iron and ironing board, and a hairdryer;
• a baby cot, on request in advance.
Which accommodation suits your family?

• La Grotte (up to 5 guests, 55 m², second floor): one bedroom with a 160x190 double bed, one bedroom with three 90x190 single beds, a shower room with WC, and a fitted kitchen with an oven and a dishwasher.

You will find the details of each accommodation on the Les Toits de Lascaux website.
2, 4 or 7 nights: three ideas for your stay
2 nights (the minimum): arrive on Thursday 29 October and leave on Saturday 31. You can take the Thursday 5 pm investigation tour (ages 8 and over) and, for a moment as a couple or among adults, the gourmet evening on Friday 30. Children aged 5 to 10 can join the storytelling tour on Friday morning at 9 am. Plan on a meal cooked in your own kitchen, too.
4 nights: arrive on Wednesday 28 October and leave on Sunday 1 November. Add a day in Sarlat-la-Canéda and its medieval lanes, and an outing to the Parc du Thot, where you can meet the animals. A combined ticket with Lascaux IV is available, so you can do both visits.
7 nights: extend your stay with the Dordogne valley, taking in Beynac, La Roque-Gageac and Domme, and a walk or a Terra Aventura trail so the children can burn off some energy between visits.
